Exercise 3: From DNS and DHCP to Clouds and Grids

Explain DNS and DHCP. How does DNS differ from DCHP configuration?

There are various resources, computers and services connected to the internet or private network. So

these must be named to be uniquely identified. Network devices understand numerical identifiers (IP

address)to get connected whereas human would like to have names that are meaningful (Domain names).

Now, Domain Name System (DNS) translate these domain names to their respective IP address to be

located and accessed. There are various other information stored in domain name which are also

interpreted by DNS.DNS follows hierarchical order.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a computer protocol which allows a certain computer to

to join an IP based network without out having to to give a user defined IP address. The main thing is,

DHCP provides unique IP address to these clients automatically and renew it automatically when they

rejoin the network.

Here, DNS all about giving names to computer and other network services in a hierarchy of domain

names. These are used in TCP/IP networks to located the location of the parties with the aid of user

friendly name.DHCP is all about assigning unique IP address to the clients trying to join a certain network

automatically

Why is it important for your online business application to use a static IP address rather than have

it dynamically assigned?

Our online business application is given a certain domain name which will be used by the user to

access it.This domain name will be unique and DNS translates it to its respective IP address. Now this

IP address will locate our web application in a huge pool of IP addresses in TCP/IP network of the

Internet.

Static IP address means IP address assigned manually and will remain constant until a change

is made but dynamic IP changes in a period of time and are assigned automatically.DNS assumes the

IP address linked to a certain domain name, will always remain constant. It will fetch that IP address

and make it available. If the IP address of the a certain domain starts to change dynamically,DNS wouldn't

be able to locate the correct IP address of the domain and we won't be able to access our web application

in an efficient time.As every time IP changes every thing like DNS database as well as IP of the network

devices are to be changed and linked which will cause huge service downtime and over heads.

What role can the following play in business-to-business e-commerce?

a.Virtual Private Network (VPN) or Grid computing services

Virtual Private Network(VPN) allows a secure access to various business information and resources.

An encrypted tunnel across the Internet is established for this. This network is virtual because it is

hidden to other except the connecting pair over the Internet. The existence of Internet all over

the world at the same time.

VPN is an effective way for business-to-business e-commerce to extend their network to be reached by

anyone, anywhere and anytime in a secure and cost-effective fashion.

The basic feature of Grid computing services is to split the on going processes or jobs and handed out

to various computers or servers over the network. Now this will make the processing of any kind of task

very fast on any machine that is available. This kind of service is very useful to tasks which requires

very high speed of processing like scientific research but are gradually getting popular among

e-business.Now this is very helpful to organizations because they can minimize their hardware

resources as well as labor cost using Grids. For example, rather than using a mainstream server of their

own, a company can make use of cheap Grid servers.Server cost and maintenance cost can be reduced

which will benefit them economically.

b. Next generation of wireless mesh networks

Wireless mesh networks are defined as multihop systems where nodes (like laptops, mobile phones and

other networking devices) assist each other in transmitting packets in a network in various adverse

conditions.WNDs provides flexible and very reliable data transfer through huge number of devices.

The other special feature of the devices used in these systems is each node(devices) can act like a router

and relay message to it neighboring nodes. This devices are intelligent enough to transmit data without

any loss as they choose alternative path when required. When the number of nodes are add, travel path

of data get shorten which provides good quality of data transfer.

With properties that satisfies multiple conflicting demands of redundancy, distributed communication ,

reliability, flexibility as well as self healing, WMNs are getting really popular. As these comes with low

price tag as compared to others, they are very helpful for business-to-business e-commerce.

c. Cloud or Social Cloud applications.

Cloud computing means to compute various jobs using the internet.Resources like servers, software and

information are provide via Internet according to demand of the user. The basic feature is, huge

number of processing computers(mainframe),database, software and other resources are placed in

various locations called cloud can be accessed by the user to make use of it.

We can find various features of cloud computing like:

Low cost making the use of resources over the Internet which will obiously be an aid to various

companies having great ideas but lack resources for it.Since the data are center. As these can be

accessed via web there are device and location independent. These are easy to be maintained as

as cloud applications need not to be installed. These are much more secure due to centralization of

data. These are more reliable as they use multi-redundant site and can handle traffic very easily.

With these sorts of feature and many more of them, cloud are very effective for business-to-business

e-commerce.

If clouding computing is the 'black box', then grid computing is a component as the 'white

box'.Explain what you interpret about that statement.

Cloud is all about working and achieving the target with the aid of internet and resources over the

cloud. We don't need to bother about how it works. We just can purchase the service and know how to

work on it i.e. it's behaviors and interfaces.Hence Cloud is a black 'box'.

Girds are all about dividing the processes to various computer and devices over a network. This division

of jobs all depend upon nature of the job, business requirement and resources available. So there are to

be set up according to the need.Hence Grid is a 'white box'.
